What to expect from the iPhone 8

Apple is expected to release the next generation of its iPhone series later this year.

The new iPhone 8 series will be different in size and feel if the rumors are true.

DigiTimes quotes a source as indicating that Apple will launch three models of different sizes. These include 4.7, 5.5 and 5.8 inches. The phones are expected to launch in the second half of 2017.

The phones will have a curved display, similar to the 5.5-inch Galaxy S7 Edge.

The tech giant expects to sell many of these reissues. The larger version alone is expected to sell 60 to 70 million units.

Some believe the two smaller versions will actually be called the 7s and 7s Plus, as Apple has done with previous lines.

The iPhone 8 could be the 10th anniversary special edition as the company unveils a special phone to mark the decade-old milestone.

Many reporters following this space say that the iPhone 8 will have an OLED screen. The screens are supplied by Samsung.

The screens could be made of plastic instead of glass. Some believe the wraparound-style OLED screen will have embedded sensors for things like gesture recognition.

An article from PCADVISOR in the UK, quoted Robert Scoble, a well-known tech strategist, who posted on Facebook that the phone screen will be a clear piece of glass onto which holograms can be overlaid on the real world, much like Microsoft’s HoloLens. There will be a new type of interface with a pop-in-it headset. The headset has a sensor.

He cites sources that indicate the battery and antennas will be hidden around the edges of the screen. Apple fits some of the parts, even though most of the chips that make up a phone are in a pack/strip on the bottom of the phone.

The article links to a report on a patent for a frameless phone. The technology could include display technology that uses self-illuminating pixels (like OLEDs) arranged on a flexible surface with gaps between them.

Other rumors include a report that Apple will ditch the home button for a system that places fingerprint sensor technology under the screen.

Both CNET and Apple Insider claim that Apple will forge the iPhone 8 out of steel.

A new red iPhone color is also on sale, according to the Japanese website Makotacara. This is in addition to the usual black, jet black, silver gold, and rose gold options.

The camera is said to be a continuation of the dual-lens setup. Business Insider Apple is reportedly considering adding augmented reality (AR) to the camera app.

Additional predictions include that the new phone line could be wirelessly charged. The physical home button could also be removed.

Face recognition and/or iris scanning are another option. Security could include storing biometrics, capturing the fingerprint and possibly the photo of the thief who stole the phone.

Some believe that Apple is developing an electronic SIM card to replace the physical SIM cards used today. The benefit offers the user more flexible roaming and eliminates the need for specific SIM cards for each operation.

Pricing is still up in the air, but many believe one or all of the so-called iPhone 8 series will be Apple’s most expensive phone yet.

Apple rarely misses out on its new phone launches and the new iPhone 8 series will be something the tech world is watching with the greatest anticipation.
